Nasreen Fynewever Appointed to Serve on the City Council

At the April 28, 2020 City Council meeting, the City Council appointed Nasreen Fynewever to serve as a City Council member the remainder of the unexpired term of Councilmember Mary Burg beginning May 2, 2020 until the first Monday in January of 2021. 

Nasreen Fynewever, her husband Bret Fynewever, and their three sons have been residents of New Brighton since 2013. She is an experienced educator who was an instructor at the high school and collegiate levels in both Michigan and Minnesota. Her time in Minnesota includes having taught Creative Writing at Mounds View High School, College Seminar at Irondale High School, and also time as an Equity Intervention Specialist at Irondale. Nasreen Fynewever is currently an Assistant Principal in the Brooklyn Center Community Schools district where she started as a Dean of Students. She has engaged in civic and social organizations as participant, public speaker, and author over the last decade. As a former City Planning Commissioner and the Chair of the Inclusive Community Task Force here in New Brighton, she seeks to stays involved as an transnational adoptee and woman of color who has sincere care for this community and the deep needs of our world. "I am honored to be appointed to lead in our community. I am committed to serve our citizens as the city encounters and adapts to the needs surrounding COVID-19 and as New Brighton continues business, decisions, and the inclusivity of all people," Councilmember Fynewever said.
