Cold weather can increase radon levels in homes. A new interactive map shows radon testing rates for every census tract in Minnesota. Across Minnesota, testing rates are generally lowest in areas with more households living in poverty. MDH recommends home testing in in all areas, and especially areas with low testing rates. High radon levels are widespread in Minnesota, and about 1% of properties in the state test for radon each year. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. If you would like to test your home for radon, free test kits are available at City Hall.
