Job Description:

Position Summary:

This position provides a student studying parks and recreation curriculum, an introductory experience into the administration and implementation of Parks and Recreation programs, events, and facilities. It will provide additional staff support for the Parks and Recreation Department and perform other duties or responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Accountabilities and Expected Outcomes

  1. Supervise, develop, implement, and evaluate a wide variety of Parks and Recreation activities, events, facilities, and projects. Examples of responsibility areas include:
  • Summer Playground Program
  • EdVenture Program
  • Senior and Adult Programs
  • Adult Athletic Leagues
  • Youth Athletic Leagues/Camps
  • Aquatic Programs
  • Various Special Events
  • Brightwood Golf Course
  • Park Maintenance
  1. Assist with reservations, scheduling, and supervision of facilities.
  2. Contribute to the development of marketing and promotional initiatives for the Parks and Recreation Department.
  3. Assist with administration and operation of Eagles Nest Indoor Playground.
  4. Attend department staff meetings and training.
  5. Complete reports, evaluations, and documentation for participant and staff feedback.

Other Duties:

  1. Assist with the scheduling, training, and providing direction for part-time/temporary and volunteer staff.
  2. Fulfill the responsibilities of part-time/temporary and volunteer staff, as necessary.
  3. Complete one week of responsibilities as a member of Park Maintenance staff.
  4. Develop and maintain professional relationships with supervisors, staff, program participants, and other professional relationships.
  5. Assist with general administrative support.
  6. Complete all other duties as assigned.

Expected Hours of Work:

Internship is Full Time from May-August. Hours are typically Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. In addition to working office hours, staff may be required to work additional events. Hours may include, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position does not have employee supervisory responsibilities. Staff will oversee participants and facility users to ensure safety, and enforcement of rules/regulations.

Typical Working Environment:

Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employee is subject to noise, standing for long periods of time, in addition to sitting, squatting, bending, and lifting up to 30 lbs.

Typical Physical Requirements for This Position:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others both in person and over the telephone. The employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position, as well as operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools consistently found in industrial kitchen, and maintenance. Staff will frequently read and interpret documents, including safety manuals and operating procedures. Staff will frequently traverse around the community center and golf course. Will occasionally lift items weighing up to 30 pounds.

Selection Criteria to Qualify for This Position:

Minimal Job Requirements:

  • Internship/practicum required for completing Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Parks and Recreation or related field.
  • Knowledge and experience working with programs, events and recreational facilities.
  • Computer proficiency: Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and written with staff, governing bodies, and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrates strong problem solving abilities and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages, abilities, cultures and backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in municipal recreation.
  • Experience with MaxGalaxy recreation management software program.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment with upper level clerical responsibility.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
