Volunteer Coaches Needed
Parents, Family & Friends- we need your help! New Brighton Parks and Recreation is looking for volunteer coaches and assistant coaches for the summer and fall leagues. Never coached before? Don’t sweat it! All the equipment and information you need to run a successful practice and game will be provided. Youth sports programs would not be available without the help of our volunteer coaches. Rules and team information will be distributed; league practice and game times are typically 6 or 7:15pm. Youth ages 5-12 will improve their fundamental basketball skills while learning more about the game and having a blast! The lessons are designed so that each and every participant, whether a beginner or a veteran, will increase both his/her skill level and knowledge of basketball. Participants will work on dribbling, shooting, defense, rebounding, team concepts, and more. All abilities welcome.
Kids ages 10-15 have the chance to learn basic paddling strokes, boat safety and fun water games while exploring New Brighton’s own Long Lake. These classes are co-sponsored by the Rice Creek Boat Club and the New Brighton Parks and Recreation Department and are taught by experienced paddling instructors.
Ed-Venture Daycare is more than summer child care. It is a flexible child care program where kids enjoy swimming, field trips, arts and crafts, special activity classes, wheeled Wednesdays and tons of outdoor time! The daycare is open June-September from 6:30am- 6:00pm at Freedom Park. Child care is provided for full or half days, from 1-5 days per week. Let your kids spend their summer learning and having fun!
This activity is designed especially for the preschooler looking for big kid fun! Camps will include interactive music, creative movement, props, games, crafts and theme based activities to keep your preschooler engaged, moving and grooving and meeting new friends.
Wanting to get your flag football skills ready for league play this fall? Come on out to our flag football training lessons, where youth ages 5-12 will be introduced to football fundamentals through drills and games. Participants will work on passing, receiving, game tactics, teamwork and more!
Flag leagues are run in the fall- see program information and registration for dates and deadlines. Learn the fundamentals of football in a non-contact manner with other girls and boys grades K-6! Players will practice catching, punting, good sportsmanship, teamwork and more. Games are run cooperatively with Mounds View, Shoreview and Arden Hills. Practices and games are held at various fields in New Brighton and surrounding cities. Registration fee includes team appropriate jersey and flag. Volunteer coaches are needed. Returning winter of 2019. This instructional ice skating class is for youth ages 5-8. Kids will meet at the outdoor rink at Freedom Park and have the opportunity to learn forward and backward skating, stops and starts, crossovers, spins, swizzles and glides. Classes are filled with fun games and allow kids to learn at their own pace. Lessons will be posted in December!
Skyhawks Minnesota has been offering safe, skill-based and fun sports camps in local communities since 1999. Full of interaction and excitement, Skyhawks’ Camps provide great fun for everyone; where children learn new sport skills and life skills. Skyhawks Mini-Hawk Sports Camp
Not sure which sport to choose? Now you don’t have to! Spend a week playing, learning, and exploring the essential skills involved in soccer, basketball, and baseball with Skyhawks Mini-Hawk Camp. This program is developed to give children a positive first step into athletics as they explore balance, movement, hand-eye coordination, and skill development all while learning essential life skills such as teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship.
Skyhawks Basketball Camp
Spend your week at this unforgettable camp learning skills to be a great basketball player both on and off the court. Skyhawks Basketball Camps use a progressive curriculum that focuses on the whole player, allowing young athletes to develop good habits while having a blast and making new friends. Learn skills such as respect, teamwork, and responsibility while shooting, dribbling, passing, and practicing the “skill of the day” in games and drills.
Skyhawks Flag Football Camp
Skyhawks Flag Football is a week-long program for your young athletes who want a complete introduction to America’s Game or for those who simply want to brush up on their skills in preparation for league play. Through our “skill of the day,” campers will learn skills on both sides of the ball, including the core components of passing, catching, and de-flagging or defensive positioning- all presented in a fund and positive environment. The week ends with eh Skyhawks Sports Bowl, giving participants a chance to showcase their skills on the gridiron!
Skyhawks Soccer Camp
Looking for a way to get ready for fall soccer leagues? Spend the week with Skyhawks! Skyhawks Soccer Camp will give young soccer players a week of focus on dribbling, passing, shooting, and ball control, allowing them to gain the technical skills and sport knowledge to take play to the next level- whether they are just beginning or refining their skills for game play. While making friends and playing games, players will focus on life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, responsibility, and respect.
Private Soccer Lessons with Coach Kelli
New Brighton offers personal instruction for players ages 8 and older who want to refine soccer skills or enter a more competitive level of play. Lesson times are pre-arranged to fit your schedule as well as instructor and field availability. Kelli Reasoner holds a degree in Exercise Science and coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF- soccer governing body for the United States). She has played college soccer, semi-professionally in the USA and professionally overseas. The progressive session includes foot skills, agility, speed, endurance, skills training, homework, and progress reports. Preschool and Beginner Soccer Skill-Builder Lessons (Ages 3-7)
A great introduction to the fun and exciting game of soccer! Youth ages 3-7 will develop coordination using large muscles and learn basic soccer skills, rules and strategies. This is a great camp for those just learning to play soccer or that need another season of skill development before registering for in-house leagues.
Intermediate and Advanced Soccer Skill-Builder Lessons (Ages 7-14)
Experienced soccer players will work to enhance their overall fitness and coordination through drills, game play, and conditioning. Youth ages 7-14 will have a great opportunity to sharpen soccer skills and review soccer rules and strategies, while making new friends and having fun. Participants will be divided according to age and ability on the first day. Open to all skill levels.
Join us for fun in your neighborhood park when we return summer 2018. Supervised and structured outdoor activities focus on fun, physical fitness and socialization. Themed activities keep kids physically active and creative. Please note, this is a drop-in program and kids can come and go as they please. Parents/guardians are encouraged to set boundaries and communicate limits with their children before they attend the program. There will be no staff available to supervise participants before or after program hours. Participants must be 6 years of age by the first day of the program.
T-Ball and Coaches Pitch leagues are run in the summer- see program information and registration for dates and deadlines. New Brighton Parks & Recreation T-Ball and Baseball programs are designed for girls and boys ages 4 through grade 3 to learn basic baseball or softball skills, as well as teamwork, good sportsmanship and more. The Mini-Sluggers league is a learning based league designed to teach t-ball skills progressing to using a pitching machine. The Lil’ Sluggers and Sluggers league are transitional leagues from t-ball to baseball and will include use of both the pitching machine and coaches pitch. All leagues participate with our partner cities of Arden Hills, Mounds View and Shoreview. Practices and games are held at various fields in New Brighton and surrounding cities. The USTA Quick Start tennis lessons will get kids on the court and playing fast. Special tennis balls are used to slow down play for the beginners. Lessons are offered at nearby City of New Brighton outdoor courts for three different levels. Kids ages 4 years and up can participate in beginner through advanced lessons. Lessons are held in the spring, summer, and fall.
Ages 12 through Adult
If you have always wanted to play the guitar, here is your chance. Learn to play chords, basic music notation, how to tune your guitar and play easy songs with simple to follow instruction. This class is designed for teens and adults who have little or no experience playing the guitar. Participants are required to bring their own guitars (electric or acoustic) or they can request to borrow one from the instructor. Class is not designed for bass guitar. Instructor, Michael May, has been teaching and performing and studying the guitar for over 30 years. He is a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit with a B.A. in Music.
