There are three Minnesota driver's licenses currently available: Standard, REAL, and Enhanced. Most Minnesota residents currently have a Standard driver's license, which is good until May 2023.
After May 2023, if you fly domestically within the U.S., you will need either a REAL DL, Enhanced DL, or a passport to board a plane. (You are not required to switch if you have no intentions of traveling via plane.)
For an additional $15, the Enhanced DL/ID will work as a dual-purpose card that serves as a DL/ID and as a passport card that can be used to travel to and return from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry. It can also be used to board aircraft for domestic travel, but cannot be used for international air travel.
Please pre-apply for a DL/ID before heading in.
For further driver's license questions please visit the MN Department of Public Safety or call 651-297-3298.
We now offer REAL driver's licenses and ID's at our location! Please note the U.S. Department of Homeland Security extended the REAL ID full enforcement deadline to May 2023.
Please carefully review all requirements on what to bring when applying for the REAL ID.
Please pre-Apply for a Driver's License or ID.
Note: Minnesota has an extension for REAL ID enforcement, allowing Federal agencies to accept driver's licenses and identification cards from Minnesota at Federal facilities, nuclear power plants and federally regulated commercial aircraft until May 2023.
We now offer Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) and ID (EID) services!
To apply for an EDL or EID please Pre-Apply for a Driver's License or ID and print your confirmation before stopping in.
Carefully review the requirements on what to bring when applying (PDF).
Once you've completed your test at an exam station you may then stop in to our location to apply for your very first Instruction Permit. Please Pre-Apply for a Driver's License or ID and print your confirmation. Then, review the identification requirements (PDF) for the additional paperwork you'll have to present. On the day of your appointment if you are under 18 a parent must be present, bring your driving logs with you, and your passed exam as necessary.
Unfortunately, New Brighton License Bureau is not an exam station.
Search for exam locations near you.
For general questions including locations, testing, or to schedule an appointment, please call 651-201-7900 or go to the MN Driver and Vehicle Services website.
You will need to contact an exam station, such as Arden Hills Exam Station, on costs and requirements to reinstate your driver’s license.

To apply for or renew a disability certificate please have the disability application (PDF) or disability renewal card completed and signed ahead of time.
As long as the form or card is complete, either the customer or a 3rd party may submit the form. We recommend mailing the form in to the state if you have time; however, if you require a temporary hang tag you will want to stop in for this service.
Please complete the Commercial Driver License Medical Self-certification Form (PDF) and bring your new medical card with you to complete your request.
