Park Project Updates
In 2020, the City of New Brighton approved the 2040 Park & Trail System Master Plan, which was a community-involved planning and design process that identifies recommendations for improvements to the park and trail system to meet the current needs and desires of the community. The City is now undertaking the first steps of implementing recommendations of the plan by making an initial investment into the park system. The first project was Sunny Square Park, which will be getting its finishing touches this Spring, and with favorable weather, will be open for field play this fall.
The City of New Brighton has begun construction on Sunny Square Park! A number of improvements and enhancements will be made.
- New open air shelter with permanent restrooms (on a timer for open and closing!)
- Ballfield enhancements
- Fitness Equipment
- New playground structure with shade structure and benches closer to the ballfield
- Regional trail connection
- Combined parking
- Pleasure skating rink in the winter in the open lawn area
Crews are on site starting the work. Trees have been marked for removal. Some trees are being removed because of project enhancements, but a large number are because of Emerald Ash Borer, tree health, overcrowding, etc. The City Forester has plans to replant trees on site in the near future!

Phase One
We are excited to announce that the Hansen Park East reconstruction project is anticipated to start in the spring of 2023. Tree removals that were necessary due to construction impacts have been completed in preparation for the site work to begin. The Hansen East project area will be closed for public use and access while construction is taking place to ensure the community's safety. There will also be some temporary street closings as removal and paving operations take place along the affected streets. We ask for your patience and consideration during these closures. As we replace the tennis courts, you will also see some construction activity taking place in Hansen West, but Hansen West will remain open to the public.
Project elements will include:
- Consolidation of parking into one parking lot, reorientation and enhancements to the two ballfields, the inclusion of a multi-purpose field overlay, the addition of a picnic shelter with restrooms near the ballfields and disc golf course, realigned trails, and stormwater enhancements.
- Tennis Court replacement on the west side of Hansen Park
Construction work will be limited to the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Monday – Saturday and is anticipated to be substantially completed by December 1, 2023.
- One of the most asked for amenities during the park planning process was the inclusion of a splash pad in New Brighton. Lions Park will be home to the City’s first splash pad! It will have a unique nature theme to blend into the feel of the surrounding Long Lake Regional Park area. This amenity will be installed in late summer/early fall, for hopeful use in the summer of 2024.

- After receiving a $300,000 grant from the MnDNR, the City will be providing a complete overhaul of this park. Included will be the addition of the City’s first outdoor pickleball courts and inclusive Bankshot basketball game, new reconstructed full-size basketball court, improved ball field, on-site parking, crosswalk enhancements for crossing Foss Road, and replacement of the park building with a picnic shelter that has restrooms (that will be open for the public on a timer during the day).
